Directed by Mamoru Oshii (Japan, 1985, 71 min.). Japanese with English subtitles.

In a haunting postapocalyptic cityscape, a young girl protects a mysterious egg she carries everywhere, while a boy armed with a gun arrives searching for a bird he saw in a dream. The girl and boy form a tentative bond, which unfolds in a world full of uncanny rituals, fossilized memories, and looming shadows.

A singular achievement of animated cinema, Angel’s Egg is an arrestingly beautiful allegorical fantasy that drifts between ethereal dream and philosophical inquiry. Created by visionary director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) in collaboration with renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D), the film intertwines Oshii’s theological and cosmic reflections with Amano’s distinctive painterly style.

Four decades after Angel’s Egg premiered, GKIDS presents a stunning new 4K restoration supervised by Oshii, bringing this enigmatic cult masterpiece to theaters nationwide for the first time.
