Directed by Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern (France, 2018, 103 min.). French with English subtitles.

Eight years after Jean Dujardin charmed his way into American theaters and hearts with the Best Picture-winner The Artist, he has laid claim to another role worthy of his comedic genius. Dujardin plays Jacques, a clueless and destitute opportunist who turns up one day on the doorstep of his sister, Monique (a sparkling Yolande Moreau), looking for a place to sleep. Monique runs a cheerful commune where down-on-their-luck French citizens can live and work with dignity. But Jacques doesn’t plan to stay long; he’s cooking up a get-rich-quick scheme that involves bringing groups of tourists from France to Bulgaria for cheap plastic surgery and a bit of sightseeing. The fact that he knows nothing about medicine or business doesn’t deter Jacques in the least, and he sets to work convincing the residents of Monique’s settlement that all they need is a nip and a tuck to propel them into the life of their dreams. Jacques’s blind ambition and his clients’ gullibility evoke recent news stories about delusional entrepreneurs, like Theranos’s Elizabeth Holmes and Fyre Festival’s Billy McFarland. Luckily, this lovable charlatan has a few clear-eyed friends who can help him to see what’s really important.
