Directed by Erige Sehiri (Tunisia, France, and Qatar, 2025, 92 min.). French and Arabic with English subtitles.
Set in Tunisia, Promised Sky follows Marie, an Ivorian pastor and former journalist whose home becomes a fragile sanctuary for three migrant women from different generations and circumstances. Naney, a young mother seeking residency for herself and her child; Jolie, a student struggling under the weight of family expectation; and Kenza, an orphaned child and sole survivor of a shipwreck, gradually form an unexpected makeshift family under Marie’s care. As the characters’ lives intertwine, the film traces the quiet negotiations of survival, belonging, and care within an atmosphere shaped by displacement and uncertainty.
Selected as the opening film in the 2025 Cannes Un Certain Regard program, the latest drama from director Erige Sehiri (Under the Fig Trees) features a stellar cast including César Award–nominated Aïssa Maïga (Bamako).
