Directed by Ethan and Joel Coen (USA, 1987, 94 min.). Digital.
Raising Arizona is a fast-paced, light-hearted farce about a husband and wife who go to extreme lengths to have a family. Soon after an incompetent robber named H. I. McDunnough (endearingly played by a young Nicolas Cage) marries a local cop named Ed (Holly Hunter), the two discover they’re incapable of having children. At first they’re devastated, but they eventually learn about the birth of a local business owner’s quintuplets and figure the parents have “got more than they can handle.” In a hilarious feat, they kidnap one of the babies to raise as their own. But it doesn’t take long for things to go awry: McDunnough’s old prison friends make an unexpected house call, and a menacing bounty hunter closes in on the baby’s kidnappers.
With an incredible supporting cast featuring John Goodman, Frances McDormand, Trey Wilson, William Forsythe, Sam McMurray, and Randall “Tex” Cobb, Raising Arizona is a not only a comedy classic, but a heart-warming tale about the enduring nature of love.
