Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (USA, 1998, 117 min.).

A cult favorite and oft-quoted cinematic darling, The Big Lebowski is the tale of Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), a slacker who finds himself in the middle of a kidnapping plot when he is mistaken for a millionaire of the same name. The Dude initially endeavors to replace his ruined rug, enlisting his bowling buddies (John Goodman and Steve Buscemi) to help him receive restitution, but he soon finds it difficult to disentangle himself from the wild series of events.

Loosely inspired by Raymond Chandler’s novel The Big Sleep, this stoner crime comedy about bowling, art, friendship, and the importance of having an interior-design element that ties the whole room together may be one of the Coen brothers’ best-known works.

Cinematographer Roger Deakins, also known for his work on several of the Coens’ other films (including Barton Fink, Fargo, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and No Country For Old Men) painstakingly orchestrated precise compositional shots with a masterful use of color to set the iconic scenes for this unforgettable story.

Co-presented with Boston Jewish Film Festival on December 26th.
