Directed by Farah Nabulsi (UK, Palestine, and Qatar, 2023, 115 min.). Arabic and English with English subtitles.
A Palestinian schoolteacher named Basem (Saleh Bakri; The Band’s Visit, The Blue Caftan, The Present) struggles to reconcile his risky commitment to political resistance with the chance of a new relationship with volunteer worker Lisa (Green Room’s Imogen Poots). Meanwhile, Basem provides mentorship and emotional support for a bereaved student, entreating the boy not to endanger his own life by avenging his brother’s death. As feelings develop between Basem and Lisa, other aspects of Basem’s life become increasingly tenuous, threatening his chance at connection in a world of violence and grief.
“Riveting.… An intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine.… At the core of [Farah Nabulsi’s] movie are three compelling performances, led by the striking and understated intensity of Saleh Bakri.” —Hollywood Reporter
