Advances in scientific techniques for the study of paintings make possible new discoveries about Rembrandt’s creative process, his materials and painting technique, and the changes he frequently made to his compositions. Explore the research and treatment carried out in the Rijksmuseum between 2016 and 2018 of the newly acquired 1634 marriage portraits of Marten Soolmans (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) and Oopjen Coppit (Musée du Louvre, Paris). Learn what researchers were able to find out about the canvas, grounds, and paint layers, as well as past restorations of the paintings.
