The intimacy of a self-portrait often suggests that we are learning something personal about the artist depicted. But self-portraits are also important markers of gender identity, providing artists with an opportunity to either affirm or challenge expectations. Consider self-portraiture as an expression of gender in works by celebrated artists throughout history.
