Explore the innovative, elusive self-portraits of British figurative painter Lucian Freud (1922–2011), whose sustained investigation of his own appearance is on view in “Lucian Freud: The Self-Portraits” from March 1 to May 25, 2020. As Freud described, “With self-portraits, ‘likeness’ becomes a different thing, because in ordinary portraits you try to paint the person in front of you, whereas in self-portraits you’ve got to paint yourself as another person.” Executed from as early as the age of 16 to the end of his life, and on canvas, paper, and etching plate, Freud’s self-portraits chart his development as a painter: from his early, more linear and graphic works to the fleshier painterly style that became the hallmark of his mature work.
