How have European and American artists seen themselves, their fellow artists, and the act of making art over the past 500 years? Building on themes explored in the photography exhibition “Creative Spaces: The Photographer’s Studio as Inspiration,” consider both emblematic representations of “the artist at work” and images of individuals, whether self-portraits or tributes to fellow artists. Examine the relationship between artist and model and discover artists portrayed with friends and family or hidden in larger works. Artists featured range from Rogier van der Weyden and Rembrandt to John Singer Sargent and Sarah Bernhardt, as well as the many photographers in “Creative Spaces.”
