Drop-In Art Making

Zines

Inspired by “The Banner Project: Mark Thomas Gibson,” create miniature zines with drawings, collages, writing, and bold graphic elements, transforming your thoughts and stories into art you can hold and share with others.

Victorian Puzzle Purse

Wednesday–Saturday, 10 am–4 pm (last entry 3:45 pm)

Learn the art of Victorian puzzle purses, intricately folded paper keepsakes created in the 18th and 19th centuries to exchange secret love notes or small gifts, with each fold revealing a new surprise for the recipient. Then create your own using drawing materials and stencils to make a secret message for a friend or loved one!

Wearable Photo Collage

Shapiro Family Courtyard

Get inspired by “Faces in the Crowd: Street Photography” on view in Gallery 169, then stop by Shapiro Family Courtyard to have your picture taken and transform it into a wearable button using a variety of collage materials.

Druker Family Pavilion, Room 159

Get inspired by the bright colors and kaleidoscopic patterns found in the quilts on view in “One Hundred Stitches, One Hundred Villages: The Beauty of Patchwork From Rural China.” Then use premade stamps in a variety of shapes and sizes to print designs onto a wearable piece of fabric.

Embellished Designs

Ages 9 and up

First, create an artwork in the Printed Patterns activity, Druker Family Pavilion, Room 159. Then go next door to learn embroidery and appliqué techniques to embellish your artwork. This activity involves the use of fine motor skills and needles.

Drop by for an interactive children’s story program. Stay for one story or the whole hour.

Drop-In Gallery Program: Conservators in Action

Conservation Center

Stop by to see Meghan Abercrobie, Gale R. Guild and Henry R. Guild Fellow for Advanced Training, work on the filling and inpainting of a reassembled Mexican ceramic jar, likely made in the 19th century. The jar is in the style of traditional búcaros de Indias: highly-decorated water vessels prized for their fragrant clay bodies which subtly infused the water with a pleasing taste and aroma.
