Eric Gottesman is an artist, teacher, and activist. He regularly works in the Middle East and Africa collaborating with communities to produce work that often challenges our perceptions of culture and place. Gottesman will share his Sudden Flowers series, which centers on a group of Ethiopian children whose parents died of AIDS and who have come together to form an art collective that produces photographs, videos, and performances to tell their stories. We will also view more recent work from his ongoing Oromaye project, which was inspired by the writings of Baalu Girma who disappeared under the country’s military junta during the 1980s. Within that context, Gottesman will discuss the power of creative expression to give voice to people who have otherwise been silenced by trauma, repressive governments, and hostile environments.
