The Chase by Arthur D. Ripley (US, 1946, 86 min.). A highly original film noir, Scotty is a down-on-his-luck until he stumbles upon a lost wallet. He returns the billfold to Eddie, a suave but ruthless businessman, who offers him a job. Scotty ignores Eddie’s violent history, but his resolve is tested when Eddie’s wife Lorna begs him to help her move to Havana in secret. Once off American shores, the couple finds common ground—and love. But they discover it’s not so easy to escape Eddie’s octopus-like reach and influence.
