Directed by Spike Lee (USA, 1989, 125 min.). Digital.

It's the hottest day of the year, but the residents of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, are keeping it cool. The older guys have a beer on the stoop, the kids break open a fire hydrant, and Mookie (played by 32-year-old Spike Lee) and his girlfriend Tina (Rosie Perez) get creative with ice cubes. But tempers flare when Sal (Danny Aiello), the Italian-American owner of the local pizza joint where Mookie works, refuses to add Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. to the restaurant’s all-white “wall of heroes.” As tensions rise, what started as an easy summer day turns into a night Mookie and his neighbors will never forget.

Co-presented with the Roxbury International Film Festival.
