Eyes Wide Shut

Directed by Stanley Kubrick (UK/USA, 1999, 159 min.). Digital.

Set during the holidays in New York, Stanley Kubrick’s last film is a glittering odyssey of personal and sexual discovery starring real-life lovers Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. When doctor Bill Hartford (Cruise) learns from his wife Alice (Kidman) that she was once tempted to cheat on him, he’s disturbed by the realization that Alice is more complicated than he thought. Wounded and jealous, Bill heads out into the night, experiencing a series of sexual encounters that range from the titillating to the terrifying. True to form, Kubrick’s use of color is restrained and meticulous, with bright whites and muted tones dominating the first several scenes. This somber palette gives way to a rainbow of colored lights as Bill’s night careens out of control, with glimpses of violet and royal purple cropping up at the most charged and perilous moments.
