Up and Down Galata by Çağan Duran and Ali Uluç Kutal (Turkey, 2015, 80 min.). Documentary.
Librairie de Pera was one of the oldest bookstores of Istanbul. Located in the neighborhood of Galata, the shop was a beacon of the region’s cosmopolitan culture for almost a century. In 2013, the bookstore closed as a result of ongoing urban transformation. Through the story of the bookstore and the testimony of local artisans, shop owners, and daily workers, trace how the demography of Galata has changed over time.
