The Roxbury International Film Festival has decided to make this screening free.

Directed by Anahid Terrence (USA, 2019, 76 min.). Digital.

This is Roxbury, as it was, is, and will be. Greetings from Roxbury covers life in the community from the late 1950s to the present, coming alive through on-camera interviews with residents who tell their story with thoughtfulness and generosity.

In the 50s, there was a line wending its way through Orchard Park, separating African Americans and whites. This line was invisible to outsiders—but as strong and real to residents as the Berlin Wall. Greetings from Roxbury chronicles the consequences of this invisible line, including the racial upheaval of the 1960s, particularly the civil unrest that took place after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, leading to a mass exodus of the white population of Roxbury. One troubled time led to another, as bussing brought unintended consequences. And, now, after decades of hardship, Roxbury must contend with gentrification.

In the words of director Anahid Terrence, a Roxbury native: "It’s said that home is where the heart is, and the participants in my film took me back to the home where I grew up. There were moments we laughed together, and moments we cried together. But somehow, every interview circled back to laughter, proof of the humanity that resides in each of us. Truth is, most of the participants, myself included, have more days behind us than ahead. And with that comes a measure of wisdom. An appreciation of truth."
