Documentary directed by Julien Faraut (USA, 2018, 95 min.). Digital.
Narrated by Mathieu Amalric, John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection revisits the rich bounty of 16-mm footage of the left-handed tennis star John McEnroe as he competes in the 1984 French Open as the world’s top-ranked player. Close-ups and slow-motion sequences of McEnroe on the court, as well as footage of his notorious temper tantrums, highlight a “man who played on the edge of his senses.” Far from a traditional documentary, Faraut mines the archival footage to create not only a lively and immersive look at a driven athlete, but a meditation on the intersection of sport and cinema.
