Directed by Abel Ferrara (USA, 1981, 81 min.).
Before Kill Bill and The Handmaiden, Abel Ferrara’s Ms. 45 set the bar for feminist revenge flicks. Seventeen-year-old Zoë Lund (who would later pen the original Bad Lieutenant) stars as Thala, a mute New York seamstress whose stunning looks attract constant attention from men. When she is assaulted twice in one day, Thala (Greek for death) unleashes her vengeance in the form of a killing spree at a costume party. This piece of controversial camp is considered exploitative by some, and progressive by others … but however you slice it, Ms. 45 offers a fascinating look at the tensions around evolving gender roles in 1981.
