Directed by Francis Ford Coppola (USA, 1982, 107 min.). 35mm.

Set in Las Vegas on the Fourth of July, Francis Ford Coppola’s spectacular musical is bathed in the luminous colors of fireworks and neon signs. Terri Garr and Frederic Forrest star as Frannie and Hank, a pair of lovers who quarrel, break up, and hit the town in search of new romance. Hank falls for Leila, a circus acrobat (Nastassja Kinski of Paris, Texas), while Frannie is swept off her feet by a suave piano player (Raul Julia of The Addams Family). Hangdog Harry Dean Stanton is perfectly cast as Hank’s best friend, a junkyard owner named Moe. Tom Waits and Crystal Gale provide a sentimental soundtrack.

If you think this all sounds a little over the top, you’re not alone. The infamously expensive film was a box office flop, in part because fans of Coppola’s macho heavy-hitters like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now were baffled by the director’s choice to sink all his money into a glitzy homage to Old Hollywood (the costs of the opulent soundstage forced him to file for bankruptcy). But if One from the Heart lacks Coppola’s signature grit, it more than compensates with splendid visuals and an infinitely watchable Terri Garr. In spite of the naysayers, this lavish confection is a ton of fun to watch.
