Directed by Radu Jude (Romania, 2016, 141 min.). Digital. Romanian with English subtitles.
Radu Jude, director of the breakout Romanian western Aferim!, returns with this “fanatically detailed, intellectually furious drama” (Richard Brody, The New Yorker), based on the autobiographical novel by Max Blecher. In the summer of 1937, a young man named Emanuel is committed to a sanatorium on the Black Sea coast for treatment of his bone tuberculosis, a treatment consisting of painful spine punctures that confine him to a plaster on a stretcher.
As Emanuel grows accustomed to his new situation, he begins to make friends and engage in political conversation with the other patients. He reads, writes, smokes, drinks, and interacts with doctors, nurses, and stretcher-bearers. While outside the hospital Romania becomes an increasingly right-wing society with less and less to offer him, Emanuel discovers that within these walls there is a rich life waiting to be lived to the fullest.
