Stromboli by Roberto Rossellini (1950, 106 min., DCP). Karin (Ingrid Bergman) plays a prisoner of war who marries Antonio in order escape from an internment camp. He takes her to his remote island, Stromboli, off the Italian coast. Her attitude and high standards of living brand her as an outsider. A threatening volcano, unnamed by the villagers, looms in the background, and like Karin’s relationship to Antonio, it could turn volatile at any moment.
