Identical twins Stephen and Timothy Quay are London-based stop motion animators who find their inspiration in Eastern European literature and classical art. Their work is distinguished by its dark humor and an uncanny feeling for color and texture. Masters of miniaturization, they turn their tiny sets into unforgettable worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhood dreams. This program includes three Quay masterworks selected by director Christopher Nolan: In Absentia (2000), The Comb (1991), and Street of Crocodiles (1986). Rounding out the program is Nolan’s short documentary Quay (2015), revealing the inner workings of the brothers’ studio. All four works will be presented on 35mm film.
“Nolan has done a major miracle for cinephiles with this miraculous 35mm production … the program forces viewers to open their eyes to a different kind of cinematic experience, one where an assault of sound and image trump any sense of plot or narrative logistics.”—Indiewire
