What do we see when we look in the mirror? Hopes and fears can be reflected along with physical appearance. Self-portraits are often based on mirror images, although they can also be products of an artist’s imagination. Ellen Hale’s Self Portrait (1885) was said to display “a man’s strength,” while Imogen Cunningham obscured her image with reflections. Join curator Erica Hirshler for an overview of self-portraits by women artists in the MFA’s collection.
