America in the 1850s was a wild place: brawling, challenging, defiant, and full of operatic grand passion. While Walt Whitman exulted in the power of the human voice to express the soaring soul of this expanding country, the master showman of all time, genius huckster P. T. Barnum, produced the first superstar media circus in his presentation of the “Swedish Nightingale,” the great diva Jenny Lind, to ecstatic American audiences. Artists from Boston Lyric Opera reveal these three extraordinarily vivid figures through their soaring music, rhapsodic poetry, and exuberant personalities.
