Il Boom

February 22–25, 2018

Directed by Vittorio De Sica (Italy, 1963, 97 min.). Digital.

Vittorio De Sica’s surreally macabre satire was released in 1963, when the postwar economic “boom” had brought new wealth and vitality to the Italian people. But for our protagonist, Giovanni Alberti, the party is over—he has poured all of his money into an absurdly lavish lifestyle for himself and his frivolous wife, leaving them with nothing. Alberti finds a new source of income when a wealthy woman offers to purchase one of his eyes for a transplant. While gleefully spending his advance payment, he begins to wonder if he can bring himself to deliver on his ghastly obligation.
