Directed by Ruben Östlund (Sweden, 2017, 142 min.). Swedish and Danish with English subtitles. Digital.

Christian is the respected curator of a Swedish contemporary art museum, a devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next big exhibition is “The Square,” an installation that invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their social responsibility to practice empathy toward their fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: after Christian is mugged, his overreaction sets off a chain of shameful events. Meanwhile, the museum’s PR agency creates an ad campaign for “The Square” that is intended to be provocative but comes off as horrifically offensive. The overblown response sends Christian, and his museum, into an existential crisis. Starring Elizabeth Moss and helmed by the acclaimed director of Force Majeure (2014), this savage comedy took home the top prize at the 2017 Cannes Film festival and is Sweden’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Academy Awards.
