Head Librarian

Under the general direction of the Director of Collections and the Director of Libraries and Archives and Museum Historian, the Head Librarian is responsible for the overall management of the Museum Library, which includes the William Morris Hunt Memorial Library and ten Curatorial Department Libraries.

Essential Functions

  • Develop the Library’s print and electronic resources in a way that is consistent with the research needs of the Museum’s staff, especially in the curatorial, conservation, and Museum Learning divisions, to support research and interpretation of the Museum’s collections
  • Direct preservation program including book binding, preservation projects, digital imaging, and assessment of materials for conservation treatment
  • Supervise all circulation activities including on-line circulation system, stack maintenance, reserves, and interlibrary loan; help develop and promote collaborative opportunities for regional resource sharing; plan for, oversee, and implement use of electronic document delivery system
  • Plan and supervise reference and research assistance in person, by telephone, mail, and electronic mail to Museum staff and outside users; develop program of bibliographic and on-line instruction in use of electronic databases including those available through Fenway Libraries Organization; design, maintain, and expand the Library’s pages on the Internet and Intranet
  • Oversee technical services and cataloging policies and procedures; plan and maintain on-line information systems serving the museum staff and wider scholarly community
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate all Library staff
  • Prepare budget proposals for the Director of Libraries and Archives and Museum Historian and manage operating budget, special funds, and grant budgets
  • Working with Development staff, secure funding for Library programs and special projects; develop new programs that maximize use of library resources, staff, and technology
  • Plan for short- and long-term space needs, including the integration of the Haverkamp Begemann library of the Center for Netherlandish Art
  • Serve on museum committees; represent the Library at local, regional and national meetings

Qualifications

  • Masters in Library Science (MLS/MLIS)
  • Seven to ten years of related experience
  • Experience hiring, training, and inspiring a library staff at all levels
  • Demonstrated experience in developing a departmental plan that communicates library goals and objectives and that aligns with the Museum’s mission
  • Must stay abreast of latest library practices, including services and technology
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external contacts
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Experience managing budgets
