The Friends of Eddie Coyle by Peter Yates (1973, 103 min.). To avoid a life prison sentence, weary Boston-based weapons dealer Eddie Coyle (Robert Mitchum) becomes an informant for both the police and the treasury department. Reluctant to give up his lifestyle entirely, he continues his illegal gun running. When the mob discovers that Eddie frequents a Dorchester bar to confide in his bartender friend Dillon (Peter Boyle), they hire Dillon to kill him. The Friends of Eddie Coyle may be the best example of Boston noir, filled with darkly poetic, guilty Irish-Catholics prone to senseless acts of violence” (Peter Keough, The Boston Phoenix).
