Gaslight by George Cukor (1944, 114 min.). Years after her aunt was murdered in her home, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) moves back into the house with her new husband, Gregory (Charles Boyer). He has a secret, however, that he will do anything to protect, and he convinces Paula that she is sick and unable to go outside. Isolated in the house, Paula starts to hear strange noises and see odd things. Is she really going insane or is her husband making her mad? Bergman’s tortured performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, her first of three.
