Searchers (Maliglutit) directed by Zacharias Kanuk (Canada, 2016, 94 min.).
Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kanuk (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner) returns with this Arctic epic inspired by John Ford’s classic Western of the same name. Kanuk’s film follows an Inuk man named Kuanana, who returns home after a hunting trip to find that his wife and daughter have been kidnapped by other Inuit men. Bent on revenge, Kuanana sets out on a grueling journey across the tundra to find and punish the perpetrators. Like the 1956 film that inspired it, Searchers examines the psychological toll that revenge can take on the vengeful, but while Ford’s film was a story of conflict between white and indigenous people, Kanuk tells the story with an all-Inuit cast.
