There is a Pulse by Bora Yediel (Turkey, 2016, 25 min.). Documentary.
The Utku Yurttas Trio specializes in a unique kind of jazz, infused with African and Anatolian beats drawn from the musicians’ cultural heritage. These rhythms are rarely heard in Western music. For this documentary, director Bora Yediel follows the group on their German tour, capturing their spirit with free-form camera movements that match the improvisational quality of the music.
Istanbul Notes by Özlem Sarıyıldız and Yunus Emre Aydın (Turkey, 2016, 69 min.). Documentary.
This improvisational documentary follows five musicians from countries outside of Turkey who have fallen in love with the Maqam music (classical Ottoman music). Separately, each of the five musicians has relocated to Turkey with the belief that traditional music is best learned and understood in its country of origin. Each has a unique story, but they share a desire to find their own musical path.
