Snow Pirates (Kar Korsanları) by Faruk Hacıhafızoğlu (2015, 83 min.). It’s 1981, and Turkey is on the brink of a brutal coup d’état and is also facing one of the harshest winters in years. In Kars, a city with a rich historical heritage located in Turkey’s far northeast corner, the need for coal is as acute as the need for freedom. The responsibility to find a way to keep their families warm falls to three young boys: Serhat, Gürbüz, and İbo. They spend their school vacation together searching for coal.
A discussion with the director follows the screening.
