Sculpture and decoration played important roles in enlivening sacred spaces during the Middle Ages. Especially during the late Gothic period, lively figures crafted from wood, marble, or alabaster kept churchgoers company as the pious prayed for divine assistance. How were such figures received and utilized in these capacities? What did it mean to have tangible representations of heavenly characters in a secular world? This gallery talk led by curatorial coordinator, Minji Kim, will focus on a selection of the MFA’s medieval sculpture collection and include a walk-through into two galleries that were modeled specifically to emulate original chapel spaces.
