In the Western world, 1967 was a year of defiance and change. Protests against the Vietnam War reached a fever pitch, racial tensions led to uprisings in Detroit and other northern cities, and thousands of people flocked to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco to join a revolution that championed art and peace over consumerism and conformity. Fifty years later, the passions of the 1967 Summer of Love remain preserved in the popular cinema of the time. Mike Nichols’s The Graduate offers a complex portrayal of female sexuality; Paul Newman stars in Cool Hand Luke as a charismatic criminal who refuses to bow to authority; and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner shattered taboos with its depiction of interracial love. Immerse yourself in the spirit of this vibrant time with a trip through the year’s best cinema.

You can also see posters, album covers, and photographs from the ’60s in “The Summer of Love” in the Edward and Nancy Roberts Family Gallery – and buy ’60s-inspired gifts at the Summer Pop-Up Shop. Both are located on the lowest level of the American Wing.

Tickets on sale July 20. All films presented on DCP unless otherwise noted.
