This nine stone grid is a celestial symbol in Hindu cosmology that represents the universe’s seven planets and the ascending and descending nodes of the moon. Each of these is connected to an astral deity (navagraha) and is identified by a particular gemstone. The wearing of the nine stones together is auspicious and protective. At one time, the placement of the stones was deeply meaningful, but by the time this armlet was made, jewelers no longer strictly adhered to the traditional arrangement.
