Blue Breath brooch

Blue Breath brooch
Seulgi Kwon
2017
Silicone, pigment, thread, plastic, feather

At first glance, Seulgi Kwon’s luminous large-scale jewelry looks like glass sculpture but as soon as you touch it you are met with a surprise—it is squishy! Using silicone, a flexible material that is soft, light, transparent, and has great movement, Kwon creates sculptural forms that evoke each stage of a plant’s life cycle. It begins with Kwon sketching out each concept, followed by making a three-dimensional structure. She then molds the silicone and adds pigment, beads, fabric, paper, thread, and other materials. In the fabrication process, the concept evolves and reflects the movement of the plants’ constantly changing forms and their mysterious colors yielding unique textures.
