Marcel Boucher
1960–1969
Gold tone metal, glass
The Paris-born Marcel Boucher started his jewelry journey working with precious materials, but today his name is synonymous with the costume jewelry business he began in March 1937. “Marcel Boucher Ltd. Novelty Jewelry” was known for high quality craftsmanship and “look of real” designs inspired by haute joaillerie. The design for this necklace may have been copied from one by a European jeweler, like Van Cleef & Arpels. The necklace features a design element on the reverse that allows the length to be extended, a detail usually reserved for fine jewelry, rather than the less expensive, mass-produced, “costume” jewelry, and is an example of the superior craftsmanship Boucher employed in his designs.
