A symbol of integrity and virtue, the orchid reminds the artist of happy occasions such as Chinese New Year celebrations and family reunions. Anna Hu’s close examination of orchids, specifically the rare ania hookeriana, led her to study art and poetry surrounding the plant. This brooch shows the influence of the renowned 20th-century artist Zhang Daqian’s paintings Orchid (1948) and Orchid and Bamboo (1976). The bending green/blue leaves crafted in titanium evoke the billowing fronds in Orchid, where the plants appear caught in a light breeze. The painter also captured the purple/red lip of the plant that Hu evokes here using the spinel gemstone. Hu is also playing with ania, a name that when spoken is similar to her own. This larger-than-life size blossom brooch, fabricated in titanium, is a surprisingly lightweight statement jewel.
