Shiva Turns Kama to Ashes

Detail of lithograph depicting meditating Shiva turning to Kamadeva, who is hiding behind bush, and incinerating Kamadeva with ray from third eye

A popular Hindu tale tells of how Kamadeva, the god of love, was sent by the gods to interrupt Shiva’s meditations high up in the Himalayas. This story is told in many Puranas, a type of Hindu literature made up of ancient myths. The roots of the Bengali festival known as Dol Jatra or Dol Purnima are thought to have originally been in this tale.
