An innovative initiative to engage communities across the region

Supported by a generous grant from Art Bridges Inc. and the Terra Foundation for American Art, the MFA will share works from its Art of the Americas collection with four partner museums across the Northeast. Curators and museum professionals from the MFA will collaborate with colleagues from the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachusetts; the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York; the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut; and Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, New York, to co-organize a series of traveling exhibitions over the next six years, drawing on the combined breadth and depth of the museums’ holdings and encouraging engagement with American art within different communities. This innovative program begins in 2018 with single-work loans to the MFA’s partner museums and provides for the creation of several small and larger-scale shows, culminating in two exhibitions of up to 30 works of art drawn from the collections of all participating museums. The MFA and the Detroit Institute of Arts are the first museums to receive grants from the Art Bridges-Terra Foundation Initiative as part of a $15 million program to examine and test new approaches to sharing collections, developing scholarship, and expanding access to and experiences with American art.
