To spend an evening in the company of artist and animator Wu Junyong is to enter a world steeped in mythological characters and creatures. Wu Junyong joins us from Hangzhou, China, in advance of a visit to Boston on the occasion of an installation of his works in the Asian galleries. Raised in a small village in Fujian Province, Wu was born into a family of artisans who created sculptures of divine beings for local temples. From this early immersion in the vernacular arts and stories, he went on to the prestigious China Academy of Art to study European art and culture. During our private time with him, he shares his magic as he creates a painting and describes his techniques and inspirations.
