Arts of Islamic Cultures in the Classroom

From ceramics and calligraphy to textiles and books, arts of Islamic cultures encompass works of art connected to religious practice as well as those that reflect many other dimensions of life. With a focus on the MFA’s Arts of Islamic Cultures Gallery, this workshop invites educators to learn how object-based learning provides a cross-disciplinary approach to exploring beliefs, ideas, objects, and practices across the Islamic world. Engage with works of art that are explicitly religious in function or design as well as objects that reflect dimensions of culture traditionally seen as secular in the West. Through discussion, exploration of the gallery, engagement with digital resources, and presentations, delve into the arts of Islamic cultures around the globe and into the way objects can help us see how religion works in the world.
