Sculpted funerary monuments from classical Athens constitute some of the most impressive surviving examples of Greek sculpture. When used as grave markers, they are also among the most personal and intimate monuments across time and place.

Hear from Seth Estrin, assistant professor in the History of Art and Architecture department at Harvard University, survey a range of funerary monuments, including highlights from the MFA’s collection, and explore how individuals living in classical Athens used sculpture to navigate their experiences of loss and grief.

Professor Estrin’s book Grief Made Marble: Funerary Sculpture in Classical Athens (Yale University Press, 2023) is a groundbreaking account of ancient funerary sculpture and the emotions it provokes in viewers.

This program is scheduled to be an in-person event, however, details may be subject to change.
