Meet in Sharf Visitor Center
Mass of Saint Gregory (15th century) by Nicolás Francés entered the MFA collection in 1936 and is among the earliest Spanish paintings in Boston. Transferred from its original panel support during treatment in 1938, this small painting tells the artistic story of medieval Spain alongside that of conservation approaches early in the 20th century. Technical examination of the panel has revealed much about Francés’s working methods and materials, while its condition illuminates many of the differences between historic and contemporary conservation practices. See this panel, currently undergoing treatment, for the first time since it was displayed in 1947.
