Class Schedule

October 21, 2022—The Senses: Visionary Photography

Photography helps us to see the world around us with fresh eyes. What is included in a photograph, and also what is not, makes this magic happen. Visit “The Stillness of Things: Photographs from the Lane Collection” to get an overview of how photography can capture a moment in time, then use cameras to create your own photo essay!

October 28, 2022—The Senses: The Sound of Music

Percussion, wind, string, and brass: explore how the vibrations of sound waves have been manipulated by cultures around the world to make music. Take a look at musical instruments from the ancient past to the present, then learn how to make ocarinas, pipes, and percussive instruments of your own!

November 4, 2022—The Senses: Scrimshawing

In 19th- and 20th-century New England, the sense of touch was elemental to sailors' lives, who worked to haul, repair, and manufacture sails, nets, ropes, and other parts of the ships vital to their survival and income. In down times, scrimshaw, creating carvings on whale teeth, was a favorite creative outlet that was often elevated to high levels of intricate detail. Take a closer look at examples in the Museum’s collections, then learn to scrimshand using imitation whale ivory, and get in touch with the historical seafaring culture of New England!

November 11, 2022—The Senses: Smell

Cultures have concocted good smelling potions, incense, and perfume since prehistoric times for the purpose of smelling good, getting closer to the divine, or even healing themselves. Discover how the olfactory sense is used in art while taking a look at sweet smelling flowers, perfume jars, and incense holders depicted in the Museum’s collections. Then use essential oils to craft your own perfume!
