Class Schedule

September 16, 2022—The Fabric of Life: Dive Into Design

Discover how what we wear on our bodies has changed over time while learning about the ways ancient and contemporary cultures in Africa, America, and Europe have designed and created their own wearable textiles. Then use watercolors, drawing materials, and collage to create designs for your own fashion line!

September 23, 2022—The Fabric of Life: Sashiko Embroidery

Discover how sustainability has played an integral role in the history of textiles and fashion design while taking a closer look at examples in the Museum’s collections. Then give new life to old garments by creating decorative and functional patches sewn with geometric patterns—the ancient Japanese mending technique of sashiko!

September 30, 2022—The Fabric of Life: Miniature Scrap Quilts

Did you know that old shirts, pants, curtains, and other textile items are sometimes used to create art? Learn about the history of quilt making in America while taking a look at examples made from repurposed items. Then create your own using tiny scraps of fabric.

October 14, 2022—The Fabric of Life: Shibori Dyeing

Learn about the process of transforming fabric, both new and repurposed, with indigo dye using the 17th-century Japanese technique called shibori! Take a closer look at examples in the Museum’s collection for inspiration, then practice the shibori dyeing technique while creating different geometric patterns on cotton bandanas.
