In celebration of the new Italian Renaissance galleries, take a closer look at the treasures on display, including a masterful example of straw marquetry on a casket and a small jewellike painting by Lavinia Fontana, who broke barriers as a successful woman artist in 17th-century Italy. Hundreds of intricately cut straw strands function as “poor man’s gold” to create the dazzling decoration on the casket, and study of the painting—executed on a unusually shaped and curved panel—reveals insights into its original use.
This program is scheduled to be an in-person event, however details may be subject to change.
