During the Renaissance, gilded frames found their way into the homes of wealthy patrons, and with growing demand, gilding developed into a specialized artisan process involving many different techniques. Discover the story of one rare frame from the 15th century, created for an altarpiece by Bartolomeo Vivarini, and its history of conservation at the MFA. Explore the materials and tools used for gilding frames, and see up close the delicate nature of gold leaf.

With Christine Storti, head of Furniture and Frame Conservation, and Lila Reid, graduate conservation intern, Furniture and Frame Conservation Laboratory.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Talks meet at Sharf Visitor Center.
