The malleability of gold has allowed artists to create intricate objects throughout the centuries. Since gold is chemically stable, it does not present the preservation challenges of most other metals. Conservators can often focus instead on studying the different technical processes artists of different cultures and across time periods used to manipulate the ore. Explore the clues left behind from different gilding techniques, and join this discussion to also learn about a selection of gilded Japanese tsubas.
